The 2020 Walk for Down Syndrome is going virtual due to precautions for COVID-19 spread. You can still participate by supporting our team at our Walk Donation Site!
Join with others in supporting Down syndrome awareness by taking part in Bismarck’s annual Designer Genes VIRTUAL Walk for Down Syndrome, This year, we will not be gathering together, so we are asking you to “Be A Hero Where You Are.” Individuals and teams are encouraged to create awareness and walk in your favorite neighborhood, park, or trail from September 19 – 26th. While you’re doing so, take a picture or a video and post to social media with the hashtag: #DGW2020.
Donations are welcome to help support Down syndrome awareness and Designer Genes’ work across the state. The Walk serves as our organization’s major fundraiser, so during this VIRTUAL year, we hope you will continue to donate and support our efforts statewide!
Anyone donating and/or participating is considered a hero. Find your favorite team and donate at least $15.00 to get an official Walk for Down Syndrome t-shirt. T-shirts will be distributed to team captains or mailed directly to you if you aren’t registered with a team.
With the funds raised from our walks, we have been able to reach almost 50% of the estimated 600 families that are estimated to have an individual family member living with Down syndrome in North Dakota. Our ability to hire a professional support staff means that families have direct access to information and emotional support who can support any challenges they may be facing. This year we were able to supply 10 North Dakota birthing hospitals with information for families with new babies with Down syndrome. While we were forced to go virtual with most of our activities, we held ongoing Family Connection calls and had families join from across the state.
WHEN: Any time from September 19 – September 26, Livestream program on September 26 (TBA)
WHERE: Wherever! Walk with your family and friends to support individuals with Down syndrome and donate to show your support! Support any of our teams or make a general donation at our Walk Donation Site!
WHO: Participants include people with Down syndrome from around the state, their families, friends, teachers, coworkers and other supporters. The general public is encouraged to attend and show their support for people of all abilities.
BACKGROUND: Designer Genes does not focus on fundraising during the Walk, however, last year alone, nationally awareness walks for Down syndrome raised more than $10.5 million to benefit national education, research and advocacy initiatives, as well as local programs and services. All funds raised through the Designer Genes Walk support both local and national programs.
While we are walking VIRTUALLY this year, here’s some great information about our normal event and organization.
